In the next 24 hours, deforestation will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere as 8 million people flying from London to New York. Stopping the loggers is the fastest and cheapest solution to climate change. So why are global leaders turning a blind eye to this crisis?"

This actually made me sit up in bed this a.m. and spill my coffee.

I did a little research, and while their math is a little fuzzy, it's true. THIS pisses me off. We're arguing about light bulbs and air flights when literally a small amount of international trade and cooperation could reduce co2 by 25%.

To be clear, They don't NEED this wood. They are cutting down the forest to sell it to the 1st world. They are also clearing the land for agriculture not to feed themselves, but to feed US!

Wow - big wakeup call. I think I need to go to Brazil. 

I knew that this occurred, but I did think that the developed nations had started to apply the pressure (read that somewhere like the LA Times a few years ago. Hadn't really thought about it since. - Typical white liberal I guess.

Consider me awake.

It IS true that they're doing this to supply us - but there's an extra catch: they're supplying us because they want the cash selling to "us" supplies them with, they can't see another route to the same levels of prosperity that we have, so they help us feed our rampant consumerism........they want development and they want it on the same lines as the west has achieved it, it's easier and quicker in the short term doing it the 'old' way, the western way. We didn't chop down our forests here in the UK just to feed ourselves either.... It's almost like a new developmental/economic model is needed, but who on earth would be the first nation to take the risk and develop it?

Right on! Keeping the forests as they are is the best weapon we have against global warming. Doesn't anyone remember their elementary school science, trees need CO2 to live and they exhale O2, which we need. More trees, less CO2.
