KOSHA DILLZ
official ♥ myspace
We've previously mentioned Kosha Dillz before, with his collaboration with C-Rayz Walz. Derek said that previous album had "classic hip-hop that rests firmly on a bed of oldskool beats", so missing from Beverly Dillz, Kosha Dillz's latest album (released November 10th on Modular Moods Records), seems to be the "oldskool beats".
Although the album starts off with a surprisingly hip-hoppy "DooDoo" - the rest of Beverly Dillz seems pretty laid back to me. There are a few exceptions like "Jungle" and "Tastes Good" (the best rap song on the album).
Personally, I thought "Puddles" was one of the better song, it's probably because it had Yak Ballz as guest. The song feels really familiar to me, like its bass is from the 80s or something. Speaking of familiar, you'll get that on his single, "Cellular Phone", which features some classic Dilliefied version of "This Old Man" and "Word Up".
Kosha Dillz was recently in the news because he remixed fellow Jewish artist YACHT (aka Jona Bechtolt) for an EP called Swim Club. You can grab the free 8-track EP at Kosha Dillz's website. I didn't listen to the entire 8 tracks, but I can tell you that I spotted some Beastie Boys, New Jack City, and Hansons references!
PS, While there are a lot of "hhheh" Hebrew sounds in "Kol Ha Kavod Lirkod", I believe all the songs on Beverly Dillz are in English.
MOSHIACH OI!
myspace
With the baby picture and my generally association that Jewish musicians tend to be either traditional or modern hip-hop, Moshiach Oi!'s album, Better Get Ready, surprised me with their hardcore punk music. Like typical punk songs, these songs are fast, loud, and brief - like a punch in the face.
The band's singer and found, Yishai Romanoff, actually sings his songs (instead of shouting out loud that you find on hardcore bands). Unfortunately, as religious as some of the songs can be ("I Wanna Learn Torah", "I Wanna Learn Torah", "This Is My G-d", "Hashem S'fasai Tiftach"), I can't help but think that the message will be lost in a loud sea of drums and guitars. The one exception of "I Love Torah", where you can clearly hear the majority of lyrics are "I love Torah, yeah!"
To me, punk bands do not often translate their live energy and performance well on the recorded medium, so to really appreciate a band like this, you sort of have to see them live. They are playing one date - probably to celebrate Hanukkah at: Chabad of Bushwick Brooklyn, New York, on December 12th.
You can pick up both of these albums from Shem Speed Store (the largest collection of Jewish music).

For a full listing of events, head over to sephardicmusicfestival.com, what I can tell you is that Matisyahu is headlining on December 14th, which incidentally is also the most expensive ($35) among all the dates. The rest of the dates are decently priced at $12 or so.

My high school reunion was last night. Don't make me say how many years.
I haven't gone to any of my high school reunions. I had a few close friends during those years and we have pretty much drifted apart.
With the magic of Facebook a few (2) people from HS have found me and I accepted their friendship. Since then about 10 have found me and attempted to friend me, but I have left their requests pending. I want to just ignore, but feel that would be too mean? Hmmmm.
I did get notes from the 2 that found me asking if I was going to the reunion. One girl was even flying in from Florida to attend! I live a mile from where the reunion was held and I could NOT do it.
So, photos were uploaded and shared on FB today. Curiosity of course made me look through about 100 of them. Luckily they were tagged with who the people were because I only recognized about FIVE people.
As I looked through the pictures I kept thinking two things:
1) Who are all these old people??
2) Where would I have been in that room if I had gone? For the life of me I couldn't envision myself going back. So many people say that High School was the happiest and best time of their life. It was just miserable and full of sadness for me, so why would I ever want to revisit or celebrate that??!
OK, letting it go...NOW~
Empty the Throne, these boys have talent, they put on a high energy show despite not having a sound engineer @ Pony (which was a surprise for them - although they DIY'd), and then the bass player ripping a hole in his pants in a low crouch head thashing moment in front of the huge crowd of about 15 in the tiny space, none of that crowd which resembled the kind of death metal fans I envisaged, i.e. a couple of pretty 20-something glamour girls with around a dozen or so boys, a couple of those boys rather sweet looking themselves with their pretty faces and blonde forward-sweep hair(!?!).
The band boys goofed off a bit between songs giving the whole thing a more Aussie larrikin feel than all dark intensity throughout, although certainly their music had driving intensity.
My other half nearly offered himself up to rescue their lack of sound guy, having been a sound engineer himself on a couple of Big Day Outs back in the day, and his own front man and chief instructor/torturer of the sound engineer on his own band's album - but they seemed to have it under control, and it was his birthday, so he just wanted to have a few drinks and enjoy some metal, followed by some 1982 Galaga on the game table downstairs, reminiscent of his own teenage and 20-something years.
They could go far though, they can play and have a great stage energy - go to Europe and America boys, seek your fortune.

Even though Chrome OS was only released a few weeks ago you can already build or download pre-built Chrome OS Virtual Machines for VirtualBox and VMware !
Some people got some great deals after spending 12 hours or more in front of stores lining up. I was not one of them! LOL!
There is nothing that could get me out of the house at 2am to go shopping unless maybe it was U2 related.....of course! HA!
Much later in the day around 4:30 my Mom and I ventured out. We went to four stores in total. We had success in all four stores, but in each place we had no problem finding a parking spot AND didn't find big crowds either.
Tomorrow I have a few stops to make too and hope it's just as easy!
The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate is currently trying to undermine his Leader, Malcolm Turnbull, in the ETS battle currently in the Senate.
Nick was a Climate Change sceptic, then he suddenly back flipped when John Howard claimed to have seen the light, then he apparently flipped back again but didn't have the courage to declare his 2nd back flip until the last week or two.
Not a good look.
When Voters already suspected he was not truely behind an ETS, he has confirmed their view that he is not a trustworthy individual. Certainly not someone you can trust to run the country the way you want it run even after he pretends to agree with you.
The truth is also suffering under the machinations of Nick and his gang. Loud claims that the Voters are melting down the phones asking him to block the Bill are given the lie by a report in todays Australian, hardly a bastion of Labor support, that an overwhelming number of Coalition Voters want the ETS passed.
The prediction is a loss of 20 seats for the Libs in metro areas which interestingly would remove Turnbull and Hockey from the side of enlightenment and also Andrew Robb and Kevin "Haneef" Andrews from the deniers.
Malcolm Turnbull has it right with the stats and I simply can't understand why the Party is even entertaining a change to an electorally disasterous alternative.
It's hardly rocket science. Do what the Voters want. The fact they are considering doing otherwise suggests the sheltered workshop of Canberra has left them out of touch with the real world.
This is probably a good thing because my soft computer hands are feeling the brunt of manual labor as we have been pulling tarps around and getting plenty of broom and shovel work.
The picture at left is not from our site but it gives a good look at how the process works. Our bunkers are longer than these ones and the bunker wall is more of an angle.
The bunkers have a ground sheet on the floor to keep the grain clean and when the stack is at its maximum height tarps are hauled over the grain to keep out impurities and water. To get the tarps in place two front end loaders are hooked up to the ends of the tarp and with the assistance of a few blokes, it is dragged over the grain. The trickiest part is being on top of the stack when the tarp is in motion and stepping onto the grain. My first step had me sinking down to my waist level immediately and I had visions of going straight under and them having to dig me out. That seemed like unecessary stress so I hooked my arm over the tarp and hung on. Trying not to look like a rank amateur. No doubt I failed but at least I didn't suffer the embarassment of having to be hauled out.
For all the excitement though, it's fantastic to be working outside in the fresh air. The temps have only hit the mid 30's so far and that has been no problem. I did manage to get through 3.5 litres of water on the first day but I am aiming to do better in the next heat wave. It's very important to keep the kidneys working.
It looks like it will be Monday at least before we get back on site but even that might be a tad optimistic. We just had a heavy downpour about an hour ago that might push it back even further.
Farming must be a bitch of a job. Late last week the farmers couldn't get the headers out because of Total Fire Bans then the rain came. The monster harvest prediction must be wobbling a bit now.
